Why Do Muslims Pelt Stones Their God at Mecca?

At mount Mina they pelt stone at satan and not on God.In he real life situation because of over crowding every year stampede occurs. The ritual is to be performed only during a short period;hence the crowd and stampede.Many deaths occur during this ritual.It is better some modification is made in this ritual to avoid deaths and spread over the unmanageable crowd.
