Is it okay to connect to someone else's wireless network?

so I went over my grandparents house with my laptop expecting to not get internet. then I just happened to notice that there were about 10 wireless networks available to connect to, just out of nowhere! The strange thing is that my grandparents do not even have internet! I connected to one of the unsecured networks (because the secured ones needed a pword). Is this dangerous or illegal?
